What drew me the most to Home Remedies was its cover , and while I wasn't expecting to like every single story, I hoped that I would find a few to be memorable. Young, reckless, and catapulted toward uncertain futures, here is the new face of Chinese youth on a quest for every kind of freedom.
Poet and essayist Cathy Park Hong fearlessly and provocatively blends memoir, cultural criticism, and history to expose fresh truths about racialized consciousness in America. Again, this line returns back to the theme of dreaming about what might be and the idea of reimagining one’s self that is so prevalent throughout Home Remedies. As I write this, the Tokyo Olympics have just come to their close, a games full of contradictions in the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, where world-class athletes are pursuing their dreams in stadiums in front of a handful of scattered spectators. After a time of such disruption, the optimist in me feels like we are finally daring to dream ways of rebuilding the world and its systems.

Through 12 stories, Home Remedies offers an eyewitness view at a number of Chinese individuals whose lives become upended by abandonment, death, sexual and spiritual awakenings. The latter of these stories, in a way, could arguably level with the devastating homoeroticism of Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain. This is one of those cases in which the author's being a "millennial" is incidental. This was another story collection from the Tournament of Books longlist. “Algorithmic Problem Solving for Father-Daughter Relationships” – about a father who uses equations and algorithms to explain his relationship with his daughter, this was a fun one that depicts what happens when cultures clash within a family.
This collection actually covered a lot of ground and each story managed to be deeply nuanced, despite the brevity that is usually expected with short stories. With that said though, I also found it frustrating that the journey with each character was so brief, with each story dropping off at what I felt was a significant moment. I wanted each story to be more complete, wanted to know what would happen to these characters. In her debut short story collection Home Remedies, Xuan Juliana Wang writes like she’s steadying herself against everyday whiplash. She has a careful ear and a steady gaze on lives that quietly, seismically shift under the rapid forces of globalization.
